Comfort, meaning and joy
Meaning, gratitude and purpose
Why a sense of purpose is linked with less loneliness, and small ways to find meaning: gratitude, kindness, mentoring, faith or philosophy, and daily moments.
Do this first
Do one small thing today that matters to someone else: a thank-you message, a check-in on a neighbor, an hour of help. Then notice how you feel afterward.
Loneliness can make life feel small and pointless. A sense of meaning, the feeling that your life matters and is connected to something beyond yourself, can work against that. And meaning usually grows from small, ordinary acts, not grand plans.
What research suggests
A 2022 analysis pooled data from People in a 2022 meta-analysis of sense of purpose and loneliness (Sutin and colleagues, 36 cohorts)As of July 1, 2022.Ages 18 to 109. A stronger sense of purpose went with less loneliness in every one of the 36 groups studied. This is an association, not proof of cause.Source: Sutin et al. (2022), Sense of purpose in life and concurrent loneliness and risk of incident loneliness, Journal of Affective Disorders (PubMed) people aged 18 to 109 in 36 separate studies. In every one, people with a stronger sense of purpose reported less loneliness. Over follow-up periods of up to 15 years, people with more purpose had Lower risk of becoming lonely later among people with a stronger sense of purpose (Sutin and colleagues, 2022)As of July 1, 2022.Pooled hazard ratio 0.85 per unit of purpose, across 28 groups followed for six weeks to 15 years.Source: Sutin et al. (2022), Sense of purpose in life and concurrent loneliness and risk of incident loneliness, Journal of Affective Disorders (PubMed) lower risk of becoming lonely later on.
These are links, not proof that purpose prevents loneliness. Loneliness can also drain a person's sense of purpose. But it suggests that building meaning and building connection can help each other.
Gratitude
Gratitude means noticing what is good, even small things, and the people behind them.
- Three good things. Each night, write down three things that went okay today, and why. Small counts: a warm drink, a kind cashier, a text from a friend.
- Thank someone. A 2018 study found that people who wrote thank-you letters underestimated how happy and surprised the people they thanked would feel, and overestimated how awkward it would be. Write to a teacher, a nurse, a neighbor, an old friend.
- Gratitude on hard days. Gratitude isn't pretending things are fine. You can be grateful for one thing and still be sad. Never use it to shame yourself for struggling.
Acts of kindness
Helping others can ease your own loneliness, too. In trials with Adults in the KIND Challenge trials in the U.S., UK and Australia (one act of kindness a week for four weeks)As of April 1, 2025.4,284 adults. Loneliness fell a small but real amount in the U.S. and UK groups, not in Australia.Source: The KIND Challenge community intervention to reduce loneliness and social isolation: an international randomized controlled trial (PMC) adults, doing at least one act of kindness for a neighbor each week for four weeks reduced loneliness a small but real amount in the U.S. and UK groups. Other research suggests kindness helps most when you meet or talk with the person you help.
Ideas:
- Offer to carry groceries, shovel a path, or pick up a prescription for a neighbor.
- Leave a kind note or a small treat for a mail carrier or cleaner.
- Check in on someone who lives alone.
- Pay a sincere compliment.
- Give your time to a cause you care about. See volunteering.
Mentoring and passing things on
Teaching what you know can be deeply meaningful, at any age.
- Youth mentoring programs pair adults with young people for regular time together. Look for programs that screen and train volunteers.
- AARP Foundation Experience Corps (U.S.) trains people 50 and older to tutor young children in reading, in person or online.
- Teach a skill at a library, community center or online: cooking, a language, a trade, a craft, a computer skill.
- Share your story. Write down family history, recipes or lessons learned for someone younger.
Faith or philosophy
Many people find meaning in a faith tradition; many others find it in philosophy, ethics, art or service. Both can give a sense of being part of something larger and a community of people who share it.
- If you have a faith, prayer, worship, study and service can be sources of meaning and belonging. See religious and spiritual communities.
- If you don't, philosophy groups, humanist or ethical societies, book clubs and service organizations can offer similar things.
- Viktor Frankl, a psychiatrist who survived the Nazi camps, wrote that people can find meaning through work, through love, and through the attitude they take toward unavoidable suffering. His book Man's Search for Meaning is listed on books for lonely times.
Small daily meaning
Meaning doesn't have to be big.
- Caring for a plant, a pet or a garden. See pets and animals.
- Doing your work, whatever it is, with care.
- Keeping a small promise to yourself.
- Making something with your hands.
- Learning one new thing.
- Being kind to the next person you meet.
Ask yourself each evening: "What did I do today that mattered, even a little?" There is almost always something.

When nothing feels meaningful
If life has felt empty or pointless for a long time, or you've lost interest in things you used to care about, that can be a sign of depression, which is common and treatable. See depression and loneliness and getting help.
